Dragons and ships roam the oceans! Can you notice all the mythical creatures and ships that are swimming and floating in the sea on this monster map?
The 16th century was an exciting time for the sailors – super dangerous and had a lot of uncharted seas. Places marked with sea monsters and dragons are metaphorically showing actual dangers in the area or uncharted areas. If you notice there is no Australia or Antarctica, instead south of the map is marked as “Terra Incognita” – “Unknown land” populated with many animals that we now know don’t actually live there.

History of the map
On the top of the map, we have the inscription that says “Universale Descrittione di Tutta la Terra Conosciuta Fin Qui”. In English, that means “Universal description of the whole earth known so far”. The map was published in 1565 in Venice by Paolo Forlani. He issued 4 maps between 1560 and 1670. The one that you can order here was the third one being the most nicely decorated and the biggest amongst all the 4. The map is an upgrade of Giacomo Gastaldi’s world map from 1546. The main added feature is the recognition of the “Unknown land” in the south - Terra Incognita. If you want to know more about the author of the map and his work head over to www.myoldmaps.com. Here is an extensive in-depth document from their website that deals with the author and his work.Monster map feel from medieval Venice
The monster map gives an authentic medieval feel and brings the 16th century ambient into the room when Venice was the most important port in the world and all the explorers and great minds were gathering in this great city. The rusty iron plate with an old Latin expression "HIC SVNT DRACONES" - translated as "HERE BE MONSTERS" or "THERE BE DRAGONS" adds to the whole authentic medieval feel. The map hangs on a wooden pull-down frame that is handmade out of over 200 years old oak. It includes genuine blacksmith-made iron hangers as well.Infuse your room with the medieval explorers' spirit
