History of the map

On the top of the map, we have the inscription that says “Universale Descrittione di Tutta la Terra Conosciuta Fin Qui”. In English, that means “Universal description of the whole earth known so far”. The map was published in 1565 in Venice by Paolo Forlani. He issued 4 maps between 1560 and 1670. The one that you can order here was the third one being the most nicely decorated and the biggest amongst all the 4. The map is an upgrade of Giacomo Gastaldi’s world map from 1546. The map hangs on a wooden pull-down frame that is handmade out of over 200 years old oak. It includes genuine blacksmith-made iron hangers as well.
