Tasmania used to be Van Diemen’s island

This map covers the entire continent and, unlike a lot of maps that came before this one; it is quite accurate in its representation of the coast and major rivers. Inside of Australia was still unknown so the author of the map used the space to add tables about the counties of some colonies. The borders on the map show British colonies. Australia was not its own country yet! Van Diemen’s Island was Tasmania’s old name. After 1851, Victoria became independent from New South Wales which is shown on the map. Queensland, and the Northern Territory, were part of New South Wales.

The map is information-dense, with illustrations of Natives of the tribe of Bogan, Natives of Australia Felix, Australian birds like Parrots and Cockatoo, and of course a couple of Kangaroos. There is also an illustration of Sydney and a beautifully ornamented border. The author of the illustrations is J. Marchant.
